Wrapping up 2017

20.12.2017

The end of 2017 marks the end of AUSSDA’s first year of existence. We’ve gotten a lot done – especially in the past few months. Time for a recap… and a break.

Events

The focus of November was our first public event. But that wasn’t the only time we acted as hosts. We also had our first, very successful meeting of our international board and welcomed all CESSDA ERIC partners in Vienna for the CESSDA General Assembly.

We were present at four additional events, to present the services of AUSSDA: the RDA Europe Workshop, the Day of Political Science, the Digital Humanities conference and the Austrian Conference of Sociology.

Archiving with a European component

Currently, we’re working towards refining our archive, the AUSSDA Dataverse, and migrating metadata from our old system. Speaking of Dataverse: AUSSDA will again act as host of an event. In January we will invite partners of the CESSDA DataverseEU project to Vienna to discuss and plan improvements we can make together.

CESSDA was also helpful in creating “media packs” based on a CESSDA deliverable gathering information on new archives. We contributed to this CESSDA deliverable by outlining our approach of building a national data service.

Legal

While developing our legal documents, we’ve also been working towards complying with the new General Data Protection Regulation, which will be implemented in May 2018. This has included trainings and first activities of documenting any personal data which may be collected in our day-to-day work.

Cooperation

In the past weeks we have also been able to secure a new partnership with a big Austrian data collection institute. You’ll have to check back in the new year to find out more or you can sign up to our newsletter, which will be rolled out in January!

Inside AUSSDA

Towards the end of 2017, our team grew and the addition of Frank Sposito has greatly increased our knowledge and expertise in the field of data archiving and archiving systems as a whole. Another teaser: our team will continue to grow in 2018!

As you can gather from this short summary of the past two months, AUSSDA has been quite busy. Therefore, we will be taking a short break and our offices will remain closed from December 22nd until January 1st.

We wish you merry Christmas, happy holidays, and all the best for 2018!
